WHAT IS A CHILD DEDICATION?
Child Dedication is a public sign that you are seeking to bring your child up in the ways of Christ, set them apart, and present them to God. The faith community plays a supportive role in this process by standing with those parents to support, encourage, and help in the process.
WHAT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY AS A PARENT?
“Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.” Psalm 127:3
Understanding that our children are not ours, but have been entrusted to us from God helps us understand the responsibility we have to take care of them.
It starts with us.
“Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:5-8 (NIV)
“Love God, your God, with your whole heart: love him with all that’s in you, love him with all you’ve got! Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are, sitting at home or walking in the street; talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night.” Deuteronomy 6:5-8 (MSG)
Your presence at the dedication indicates your desire to dedicate your child to Jesus Christ. You will be asked the following questions…
Will you teach your child the truths of scripture?
Will you model, both in word and in action, God’s love for your child?
Will you consistently seek to provide a safe and God honoring marriage and family environment for your child?
Will you commit to pray daily for God’s direction in your lives and in the life of your child?
And will you encourage your child toward an obedient and joyful relationship with Jesus Christ?
Is so, you will say “We will.”
WHAT IS MY ROLE AS A PARENT?
Follow the biblical examples of dedication.
1 Samuel 1:11 – Hannah and Samuel
Our first example in the bible of a child being dedicated to the Lord was Hannah vowing that if God allowed her to have a child she would “give him to the Lord all the days of his life…”
Luke 2 – Mary and Joseph
“Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the House of the Lord.” This was an act of dedication and recognition that He really belonged to God. They presented Him back to God.
Job 1:5 – Continuously pray for our children.
Ephesians 6:4 Instructing them in the ways of the Lord.
Proverbs 20:7 Setting a Godly example.
Proverbs 29:17 Discipline them as the Lord would discipline us.
PRAYER OF DEDICATION & BLESSING
As a parent you will have the unique opportunity to choose a life verse and to dedicate and pray a prayer of blessing over your child. Use this as a sacred moment to ask for God’s favor by speaking truth over them and into their life.
The deadline has passed for sign ups for Sunday. We’ll be having dedications again in the fall.
